Malvika: Hi Sanjit, before we begin, could you tell us more about your current work profile and your career trajectory so far?

Sanjit: I work as a Senior Project Manager at Infosys.

I have been in the IT space for over the last 18+ years, my overall experience is more than 20 years. I started in a manufacturing organization and now I’m a Program Manager in the IT industry serving a large banking customer as part of the BFSI area and testing services is my line of work.

Malvika: What got you interested in Data Science & Machine Learning?

Sanjit: I actually don’t handle data a lot, but once working on one of the transformation programs recently, I found the customer really struggling with data.

If you look at the industry today, data is everywhere. Volumes of data and hidden information. So that’s what excited me when I realized the scope of data.

Malvika: What is the goal of Data Science? In your view, how has Data Science evolved in the last few years?

Sanjit: As I mentioned, data today is available in huge numbers.

With all this data, you know whatever your goal is, the goal is temporary. You can use data to extract and get meaningful insights.

These insights help boost productivity in the long run, bring more opportunities and more efficiency to the way you work.

Malvika: What are the current trends in Data Science that you are most excited about?

Sanjit: Simple human activities that can be taken up by systems is really exciting.

When I think of the end goal of Data Science and cognitive automation, that just fuels my interest in the field. We have seen data automation through the years but when you look at cognitive automation, emulating how people behave and feel, that is the trend that inspires Data Science aspirants.

Malvika: Which are some of the blogs that you read? Which are the top two Data Science & AI influencers you follow?

Sanjit: I surely follow Medium. I also read through KDNuggets.

I have subscribed to Medium and while I commute from office, at that time, I catch up with all the updates.

Malvika: What are some of the initial challenges you faced when you got started on your Data Science journey and how did you overcome it?

Sanjit: I had started my IT journey learning Java.

That was nearly 20 years back and then I moved into the testing role. So after all this while, learning an entirely new tool gave me an initial hiccup. However, as we practice more, I like to think you need to persevere, not push yourself too hard.

Another issue was, given my profile of managing a lot of things, time was an issue but when we actually see something meaningful coming out of our agenda, it all becomes worth it.

Malvika: Crafting a great Data Science resume is a critical part of getting shortlisted for Data Science roles. Tell us some ways in which you have improved your resume as part of Data Science Career Launchpad.

Sanjit: The Launchpad sessions have given us good insights into building our resume, our GitHub profile, and presenting information in the right way.

Malvika: At INSAID, students are encouraged to build high-quality GitHub profiles. Have you built a GitHub portfolio and how do you think this will help you?

Sanjit: GitHub is a decent repository for storing all your work. You can put all your projects in one place and it will enable any person looking at your profile to understand your body of work and your level of expertise.

Malvika: INSAID’s mission is to Groom Data Leaders of tomorrow. What do you understand by a Data Leader? And how is a Data Leader different from a Data Scientist?

Sanjit: We know the chain; it starts with gathering the data, cleaning the data, pre-processing, then testing and applying algorithms and models. It’s an intricate process.

A Data Leader is someone involved in all the steps. Determining what kind of data is not important, getting into the many possible insights the data can offer and then you know, bringing out the best in data so these are the things Data Leaders do differently from Data Scientists.

Malvika: How has your journey with INSAID been so far? Do you have any comments on how the curriculum has been structured, the faculty and the support team?

Sanjit: INSAID has been doing a wonderful job!

It started great too. When we started learning Python that gave us a real boost. The different sessions that are happening like Fireside chat and Industry Speakers are very helpful.

They keep us informed of the world moving into something that we are far away from. That keeps us motivated to bridge the gap sooner.

Malvika: Thank you for your time, Sanjit. All the best for your future!
