Meet Prasun from Cognizant

At INSAID, we create accomplished and empowered Data Leaders. We groom our students to dominate the world of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence and reshape their future. We value what our students bring to the table. We share their vision and support them during their journey and ensure that they carve a niche for themselves.

We’re proud to have tutored exceptional students all across India. Today, one such exceptional student, Prasun stands in the spotlight.

Student Name: Prasun
Batch: GCD – February 2019
Total years of experience: 5 years
Area of expertise:  IT Solutions

Malvika: Can you start by telling me something about your professional journey so far?

Prasun: After completing my B.Tech in Computer Science, I joined Infosys in 2014. There I started as a Systems Engineer and when my training was completed, I was working as a Data Warehouse Developer for around 4-5 years at Infosys. I was then promoted to Senior Technology Analyst. I joined Cognizant recently last year. I am currently working with data mapping tools.

Malvika: What got you interested in Data Science and machine learning?

Prasun: From the initial stage only, I worked as a Data Warehouse Developer, and I found it interesting to go deep into the data. I like to analyze the data as far as possible. I wanted to try something new and something more to do to dig into the data. I heard about Data Science and deep learning from my colleagues and friends.

Malvika: What do you think is the goal of Data Science?

Prasun: So what I understand is that you need to find hidden insights from data, and from that insight, we can predict the future. This equips us with necessary business actions to improve our business.

Malvika: How do you think Data Science has evolved over the years?

Prasun: In the last 5- 10 years, we have used Data Science for major developments. 5 years ago, we could not think like this. The way Amazon or Flipkart or any other online business has used AI to improve customer experience, from a business perspective as well is phenomenal. I think that is our ultimate goal.

Malvika: Do you follow any Data Science, machine learning, or AI blogs? Or are there any Data Scientists that you follow?

Prasun: We had some sessions and also through my LinkedIn profile, I got to know good Data Scientists like Kirk Borne and Andrew Ng, I follow them as of now. I’m sure the list will only grow once I advance in this space.

Malvika: Do you have any experience with Python libraries or packages that you want to share?

Prasun: I started learning Python at INSAID itself. From whatever I have explored, Numpy, Pandas, Matplotlib and Seaborn are most useful to me.

Malvika: Crafting a great resume is important for getting shortlisted for these roles. How do you think INSAID has helped you build your resume as part of the Data Science career Launchpad?

Prasun: It did help me a lot! In my current resume, I have provided the links for each of the projects I’m working on or I’m building. The projects on my Github profile, and also the LinkedIn profile are best used because of my career launchpad session at INSAID.

Malvika: INSAID’s vision is to grow Data Leaders of tomorrow. What do you understand by a Data Leader? And how do you think a data leader is different from a Data Scientist?

Prasun: A Data Scientist is someone who can go deep into the data and apply some machine learning and predict an outcome for the future. This is where his role ends, while a Data Leader will be basically focused on the business perspective, what decisions need to be taken for the business in a larger context.

Malvika: Did you face any initial challenges when you began your interaction with Data Science?

Prasun: In my college, I was not a programming person. In my career as well I was working on SQL and databases but not any programming scripts. Python was new to me completely. The challenge was to ace it, before I faced any more machine learning but the language is easy and it wasn’t too long before I did indeed got good at it. It’s still a long road but I am feeling positive.

Malvika: Thank you Prasun, it was lovely talking to you!
