In Talks with Sourav Ghosh From Huawei India

Sourav Ghosh has been in the telecom industry for over five years now. As a senior software engineer he is trying to develop models that could collect, analyze and troubleshoot network issues. And as the telecom industry gradually merge with data science and Machine Learning applications, he decided to upskill and joined the Global Certificate in Data Science & AI (GCDAI) program at Accredian.

In this interview, let’s see what is his take on the evolution of data science and how his experience has been at Accredian.

Question 1: Which program & batch are you part of at Accredian & tell us more about your current work profile?

Sourav: I am part of the Global Certificate in Data Science & AI (GCDAI) program, July 2020 batch. I’m a senior software engineer at Huawei India. I have been working in a fixed access network platform of Huawei since 2016 supporting seven to eight countries. Huawei has been flourishing in the telecom industry via newer technologies and is gradually merging with data science and cloud analytics.

We sell our telecom products in 180+ countries across the globe and along with those telecom equipment we also provide a smart solution of network experience to our customers. Along with a network plan, we also offer our customers network issues.

Right now, we are continuously trying to create a user-friendly decision tree model that would offer predictive analytics on the ping pong effect amongst customers. This model is being built to prevent the frequent signaling issues that occur between the base station and the network equipment signaling process.

And this model has the potential to help us collect data about the real-time network traffic. After all the data has been collected and the KPIs are in place, the model would help analyze our algorithm and regression classifiers to predict the issue. Apart from that, we are also trying to implement big data.

Question 2: In your view, how has Data Science evolved in the last few years?

Sourav: I myself started my career in the data science field. Although at that time the term data science was not so trending and most people didn’t know about it. But over the past years there has been an exponential growth of data around the world. With this boom of data on a global scale, suddenly we see the need for a subject called Data Science which actually deals with the use, analysis and observation of already generated data.

And through observation of raw data, it is not at all impossible to see the existing patterns within them. This underlying pattern in data gives us the strength to analyze and predict, whether it be future events or past. Moreover, we can predict anything ranging from socio-economic issues to the growth curve of a business.

And right now, what we are doing is we are teaching machines to analyze the existing patterns in data to make accurate predictions. This is where machine learning applications and artificial intelligence come into play. AI and machine learning applications are nothing but technology created by us to give power to a machine so that it can do what we have been doing more accurately, efficiently and quickly.

After the pandemic, we can see this even more in almost all industries. Take the spread of COVID-19 as an example. If we try we can find out not only the global death rates and the spread of the virus but can also predict how much more its impact is going to be in the future and how we can recover from it. In fact I have seen quite a few analyses on COVID-19 data and I feel they are simply amazing.

And, this is not a simple task. It is humanly impossible to predict results out of complex data patterns. This is why we need and have been implementing AI and machine learning applications, may it be in our business, healthcare centers or in construction planning. So, right now, the evolution of data science is pretty apparent and I believe in the upcoming years, it is going to be huge.

Question 3: What are the current trends in Data Science that you are most excited about?

Sourav: From agriculture to space, data science and machine learning applications are spanning across industries. Currently, the trend that I am excited about is deep fake video. I recently saw a video on Apollo 13. There are a lot of deep fake videos available online where the audio in the synthetic image of a person is replaced with another person’s image or the audio in the video is replaced with another regular image. And they are so perfect that your eyes will not be able to differentiate whether it is authentic or not. It is quite interesting and I am quite excited about it.

Question 4: Which are some of the blogs that you follow?

Sourav: There were quite a few blogs that I used to follow while studying at Accredian like KDnuggets. There are also some data science blogs that I personally follow Simply Statistics, Data Collective, Data Science Central, Data Science 101, and NGS AI blog. Apart from that I also watch a lot of videos and tutorials of machine learning applications.

This was a conversation with one of our GCDAI students – Sourav Ghosh.
