In Talks with Harish Purohit From HCL Technologies I Accredian Spotlight

Being a developer, Harish Purohit did not know about data science until a few years ago. But when he started reading more on it, his curiosity turned to a stubborn interest which he could not and did not want to let go. So, without any further delay he looked for the right data science course in Bangalore and enrolled for the Global Certificate in Data Science & AI (GCDAI) program at Accredian.

In this interview, let’s see what drives Harish’s passion for data science and how his learning expedition has been at Accredian.

Question 1: Which program & batch are you part of at Accredian & tell us more about your current work profile?

Harish: I am part of the Global Certificate in Data Science & AI (GCDAI) program, January 2020  batch. Currently, I am the technical lead at HCL performing NB pro in our software systems like FMS and braking systems mainly used for testing requirements, or as we call it, an RVT as per Dion’s guidelines, which is nothing but a standard specified for any aircraft systems.

Question 2: Walk us through your career journey & what got you interested in Data Science & Machine Learning?

Harish: I have a total of six-plus years of experience in the ICT industry. I started my career as a C developer in a startup company, where my core responsibility was writing C codes on cloud-based storage products. I worked there for almost six to seven months. I’ve also worked in the avionics industry for the past five years. I’ve been involved in doing vnv activities for boon software like display systems or FMS or braking systems.

When I heard about data science and machine learning, I didn’t even know what they were. It’s after reading a couple of articles on the internet about data science that I started to wonder about data interpretations and its impact on the common man. To me data science in recommendation systems is really interesting as it gives you computed recommendations based on your purchase history, etc. That’s when I searched for data science course in Bangalore and found the online course of Accredian.

Question 3: What tools and packages in Data Science & Machine Learning have you mastered in your Data Science & AI program at Accredian so far?

Harish: When I started this course at Accredian, I didn’t know anything about Python. And, I am very much glad to say that I’ve become very competent in it now, especially Pandas. I will not say I’ve mastered it, but still, I’m very much confident in PI and Python Pandas. Because the course of Accredian is online, I find it way better than any traditional classroom-based data science course in Bangalore.

Question 4: What are some initial challenges when you got started on your Data Science journey, and how did you overcome them?

Harish: When I took up this course, I had zero knowledge of Python, statistics and mathematics. Accredian’s startup kit helped me understand the basics of Python and statistics, that further helped me comprehend the concepts better.

I had to put extra effort to get the data from the internet on statistics and Python, and do more track work on the condos and its different examples. To understand the concepts better and faster, I also read different blogs and that helped me significantly to overcome my initial challenges.

Question 5: Who is your favorite faculty at Accredian, and what did you learn from him the Most?

Harish: I think Suchit and Deepesh are my favorite faculties at Accredian. They keep things very simple and don’t complicate them. And, that’s what I’ve been trying to do as well from the time I’ve joined Accredian and started this course. I’m trying to keep things simple and learn in a more simplistic way.

Question 6: What is the goal of Data Science?

Harish: Data science’s goal is to solve business problems, not to restrict itself to the business outcome of an individual company or individual digital sector and provide a solution to common man problems.

Question 7: What are the current trends in Data Science that you are most excited about?

Harish: I’m excited about the recommendation systems and the chatbot recommendation systems. The automatic generation of recommendations to the end-user based on recently fed data and customer patterns is simply fantastic. Apart from that, earlier we had to wait for a customer executive to resolve product or service related issues. But now, the solutions are pretty much instant through chatbots. The chatbot provided by Wiki’s Help Support can be a good example of this. Because of such daily innovation it is important for professionals to not just stay updated but upskill in data science via the right data science course in Bangalore or in whichever city they belong in.

Question 9: Which are some of the blogs that you follow?

Harish: A few of them are AnalyticsVidhya, Medium and Kaggle. But mostly I prefer reading AnalyticsVidhya.

Question 10: What is your advice to anyone wanting to start a career in Data Science?

Harish: I believe data science is for anyone interested in data or tries to read and understand data. But having said that, data science is a massive field of study and work in itself. And, it’s difficult to choose one specific stream, like machine learning, AI, neural networks, etc.

So, I would suggest to identify and understand your interests in data science, and in which domain you would want to start your career. Focus on those things, the algorithms related to those things, and work on that rather than trying everything and learning nothing.

Choose the right data science course in Bangalore or in the city they live in so that they can receive formal training and professional guidance.

This was a conversation with one of our GCDAI students – Harish Purohit.
