Meet Bhimarao Kamidi from MOL IPS

At Accredian, we create accomplished and empowered Data Leaders. We groom our students to dominate the world of Data Science and AI and reshape their future. We value what our students bring to the table. We share their vision and support them during their journey and ensure that they carve a niche for themselves.

We’re proud to have tutored exceptional students all across India. Today, one such exceptional student, Bhimarao Kamidi stands in the spotlight.

Student Name: Bhimarao Kamidi
Current Organization: MOL IPS
Batch: GCD – August 2019
Total years of experience: 11 years

Malvika: Hi Bhimarao, before we begin, could you tell us more about your current work profile?

Bhimarao: I’m currently working in the shipping industry that is ITeS (IT-enabled services) industry and we work for ONE Shipliner Company as an offshore center. As for my current profile, I’m a Manager for Europe export documentation.

And this course at Accredian is somewhat, especially that EDA part- what we have learned in Term 1 and 2, that is helping me in understanding certain things in my current role and the entire course will help me to take part in all the automation that is happening in my organization currently.

So I’m closely and regularly keeping in touch with our IT team like those who are developing these automation scripts and automating the current activities, now I’m able to understand what they are, how they are writing and what they are like, how they are making inferences and all that.

I’m getting some sense, earlier I was completely blank but now that half of the course is done I am able to understand what is happening in the industry as well as my organization.

Malvika: Could you walk us through your career journey so far?

Bhimarao: Prior to this, I worked for First Indian Corporation for about 13 months.

One month I worked as a Data Processing Associate that is almost like a data entry job.

After that, I decided to seek a career in at least one-core industry and I chose shipping.
Since 2008, I’m working in MOL IPS, Hyderabad. I joined as a Junior Executive and 11 years later, I’ve been promoted to Manager.

In these 10 years, I worked in different export documentations and we have handled some migrations as well from onshore to offshore. We handled some migrations like we migrated Indonesian exports offshore and successfully completed that process in Hyderabad.

Then we moved to Malaysian exports and I have also been there for US exports for three and a half years almost and it’s been 4 years since I’ve been into Europe exports now.

We handle the export documentation, invoicing and other shipping related activities for export planner company- ONE.

Malvika: What got you interested in Data Science & Machine Learning?

Bhimarao: It is a part of my learning process honestly.

When I joined this organization, after one year when I decided to settle in this domain, then I did my PG diploma in shipping management itself. That helped me to somewhat provide training to the various teams and helped me to settle myself and become a part of the current process much more smoothly.

After that, I started thinking what next? Almost one year ago, I started discussing with a friend what is happening in the industry, what is the best and not. Different people have different ideas. I decided to do the SAP modules of Supply Chain Management, I thought it is related to supply chain management and material management. Most of the people suggested me to do this because I was into a logistics and shipping company.

I further investigated and compared FICO SAP, SCM SAP, Hotel Management SAP and explored what else is there and that’s when I came across Data Science.

I compared and weighed my options and I thought like no that the advances in ML & AI will be incomparable. Then I started watching YouTube videos, searching what is happening in my industry, I started looking into the managerial aspects and what is happening on the top-level, not at the mid-level.

So in a span of 15 days, I shifted my focus from SAP to Data Science and later I joined Accredian.

Malvika: What all tools and packages in Data Science & Machine Learning have you mastered in your Data Science & AI program at Accredian so far?

Bhimarao: We started EDA first with NumPy and Pandas. We learned a number of Python packages.
Since learning ML, I have started using Google Collab and Scikit Learn.

Malvika:  What are some of the initial challenges you faced when you got started on your Data Science journey and how did you overcome it?

Bhimarao: Well, I have a more practical approach to things. I don’t believe that certain things are easier as people keep saying. I know my limitations. I’m purely from a commerce background and I’m not in touch with math at all.

Before joining this course, I kept thinking that even though people keep saying that it is easy and you have packages for everything and you just need to play with that. I still doubted that we will miss something just because of the lack of knowledge of math concepts and statistics.

And these starter kits helped me, especially the Statistics Starter kit.

Malvika: Who is your favorite faculty at Accredian and what did you learn from him the most?

Bhimarao: Accredian has great faculty who know how to teach. I feel it would be unfair to say someone teaches better than the other.

Everybody has their own way of teaching, but what I understood from the way they groomed and the way they delivered, I didn’t see much difference.

The way they teach and the pace they take is very standard across faculty. They might have a person-to-person difference, but I still don’t see it fit compare any two people.

These people are awesome. Every time we talk, the faculty’s patience levels, especially when they have to answer very, very basic questions, are remarkable!

Malvika: What is the goal of Data Science?

Bhimarao: As per my understanding, it is solving business problems.

Another goal would be the optimization of processes. The goal of Data Science would definitely be to solve business problems but if you go beyond to the ML and AI part of it, automation would come up as an important objective/goal.

Malvika: What are the current trends in Data Science that you are most excited about?

Bhimarao: Let me give a personal example.

There is one process in our office called the Chat Process. We provide services or online support to our customers in the US with a Chatbot. Even though I was using it, I didn’t know how it worked or where it came from.

It is an application of Data Science. This I realized when I connected what is happening around me, maybe after some time, I can create some chatbot of my own- for my process and role.

Malvika: Which are some of the blogs that you follow?

Bhimarao: I follow GeeksForGeeks– it has detailed information for every small query that you might have and they take the learner’s perspective into account. I frequent Kaggle and Medium too.

Malvika: At Accredian, students are encouraged to build high-quality GitHub profiles. Have you built a GitHub portfolio and how do you think this will help you?

Bhimarao: GitHub is great for the discovery of digital portfolios. it helps both the learners and the recruiters to sort out the best candidates.

Also, learners can follow GitHub profiles that are most helpful for them.

Malvika: Crafting a great Data Science resume is a critical part of getting shortlisted for Data Science roles. Tell us some ways in which you have improved your resume as part of Data Science Career Launchpad.

Bhimarao: This is an awesome question. I never miss these sessions at Accredian.

As part of my current role, even we conduct interviews but sometimes resumes stretch beyond 2-3 pages based on their experience and some people simply come with a single page resume and most of them are freshers.

Most people add half a page worth personal information and might leave half a page blank which is not encouraged at all.

Coming to my resume, it is almost 3.5 pages. I started long back and I kept adding all-new data and 12 years of experience into my resume. Now, after attending the Career Launchpad session, I understand the difference between a master resume and customized resumes.

I ensured that my master resume was ready. Then I revisited the session, followed the points discussed in the session and prepared what was my version 1.

It took me around 3-4 days time to sort out all these things and finally I was successful in fitting the 3-3.5 pages into 1 page.

I got positive feedback as well.

Breaking down the resume into bullet points really helped me and now my resume is looking crisp and clear. All the data is intact and not missed, and I have added some additional information also into that but still, it is crisp and clear all in one place.

Malvika: Thank you for your time, Bhimarao. All the best for your future!
