Malvika: Can you start by telling me something about your professional journey so far?
Manju: I have three years of experience in the IT industry. I work in service management in TCS right now. So I learned Python and I read about data science at the time. I was excited to find about the booming field. I realized I can learn much more than I can. I thought I’d like to make a career out of it.
Malvika: Can you talk to me about some Python packages or libraries that you’d like to use?
Manju: For Data Science I use Numpy and Pandas. They are very helpful for initial data analysis.
Malvika: Are there any Data Science and AI trends that you’re looking out for?
Manju: First one is automation. I’m excited about how different processes are becoming automated. Virtual reality is going to be the next big trend. There’s another trend called edge computing. Edge computing is still very dormant. Automation is going to play a major role in everything in the future.
Malvika: Do you follow any blogs or any Data Science or AI influencers?
Manju: I follow Kirk Borne and Monica Rogati. Most of my knowledge about industry developments come from them.
Malvika: Were there any initial challenges that you faced when you started off in your journey to pursue Data Science?
Manju: I was well acquainted with Python so that was not a problem. The statistics part was a little troubling so I felt some friction when I started with machine learning.
Malvika: Let’s talk about other languages that you know, apart from Python?
Manju: I am pretty hands-on in Java; whether it’s object-oriented and programming. When I started learning Python I found it was much easier than Java and C. In Java, there is more syntax to keep track of.
Malvika: What do you think is the goal of Data Science?
Manju: In the upcoming years, everything might be automated. Data obviously will play an important role. So based on the data, whatever we collect, we have to understand it is past and present data. The goal of Data Science is to make business profitable by estimating upcoming trends and changing accordingly.
Malvika: Are there any current applications of Data Science and AI that you’re looking forward to?
Manju: I see recommendation engines becoming quite popular in the Indian market. LinkedIn, Instagram and Facebook use your data to give you suggestions. Amazon, YouTube, and Google also use recommendation engines based on data.
Malvika: Accredian’s vision is to grow Data Leaders of tomorrow. What do you understand by a Data Leader? And how do you think a data leader is different from a Data Scientist?
Manju: Data Leader is someone who understands the business and the requirements and he knows how to run the business all the time. The Data Scientist just analyzes the data and highlights what trends will be seen in the coming years.
The answers to why something happened and what will happen in the future is the role of a Data Scientist. The major policy decisions and the future based business decisions are made by the Data Leader. He also keeps his team of Data Scientists in check.
Malvika: Do you have any advice for somebody who’s starting out in Data Science and machine learning?
Manju: Data Science will play an important role in the coming years. When you learn also start observing things about you. This is not structured learning, you need to pick what’s best for your industry and use it to your advantage.
Malvika: I understand that you’re working. So how do you manage your studies?
Manju: Yes, I try to go through the material every morning, and then I’m super regular on weekends. If I’m too invested or busy a particular week and can’t study every work morning, I try to cap it at least 4-5 days a week. Nothing less than that. Accredian has helped me a lot to make this easier. Not only on how managing your day but also in getting correct career guidance, Accredian has been very useful!
