Current Organization: Dataperts technologies
Work experience: 11 years
GCD August 2018 Student
Goal: To upskill and become a data leader.
In our recent Accredian spotlight edition, we caught up in a real-time conversation with one of our students.
In the following discussion, our academic head Vikas Mehta is in conversation with Sunil Raperia who is currently in our GCD Programme and has completed the first term.
Vikas: Hello Sunil, Let’s start with your background and how you became interested in learning Data Science?
Sunil: Hello Vikas, so my professional journey started almost 12 years back. I started my career in software testing.
After about two and a half years in the same company, I started working for Deutsche Bank in reporting using SAS technology.
After that, I moved to Infosys, Pune working in banking and insurance domain. I worked there for 3 and a half years.
I also got an opportunity to work with EXL in Singapore after that. Here I was a part of mobile marketing consulting division. One of our clients was a well-known telecom company SingTel.
In big firms like these all the processes are automated, so we had to look into these processes and we were responsible for generating reports, providing solutions to issues, creating business requirements and sending to clients like Tech Mahindra. I worked as a SAS developer.
After that, I came back to India and joined a company called Dataperts in Gurgaon. It is mainly a freelance company who also provides training in many domains.
Working with this company I gathered knowledge about Python, I optimized SAS codes and also worked to enhance the existing processes.
I’m not basically from the statistical background. Therefore I took the initiative to learn about regression models in past one year because working in an organization where all the processes are automated you have little room left to understand things from the core.
It can make you take things for granted because obviously when you are well paid and you are required to do a certain job beyond that, there is no effort and learning.
I came across Data Science and Machine Learning while working with EXL in Singapore.
Working with a team closely made me curious to know who develops these models, and after a few interactions with the team, I got to know that these models were outsourced from China and are developed by hardcore statisticians.
Vikas: that’s great, so what is your next step toward Data Science. How do you want to shape your career henceforth?
I want to learn Data Science and Machine Learning basics and understand it from the core.
What I have realized is that unless you work for the startups you are not exposed to the molecular level of processes.
I want to learn what are the ideas behind developing any model. What is the troubleshooting behind any model creation?
I want to update my skillset and want to know the thought process behind the development of a particular progression.
I am looking forward to learning about logistic regression how is it deployed in a churn model.
How the variables are chosen and what is the correlation?
I want my concepts to be clear so that I’m ready to take up any industry project.
I don’t want to be a hardcore developer. Basically, I would like to be a part of the decision-making process wherein I look into the subject matter and would have a team of developers to implement a particular idea and give outputs on the same.
That requires a holistic learning of data science.
Vikas: that’s great, so you are already on that part of your career where you are a subject matter expert and companies approach you for your consultation, and now you have decided to take up a full-fledged programme to get a clear understanding of Data Science. I want to know why did you choose Accredian’s GCD programme whereas there are many institutes in the same space providing similar courses?
Sunil: I went through the course content of many institutes.
As I was also a trainer once I know that it is very easy to bluff a beginner, so I did my research thoroughly.
I never wanted to go for a theoretical course. There is a lot of content available on the internet for the same.
The internet is full of information on topics we are covering in this course.
The difference comes in the way we are taught by Suchit, I am so sure that the way he teaches us even a class 6 student would learn Data Science.
He makes it so easy for us to learn and steps into the shoes of the end user to make us learn maximum.
What I personally like is that we are taught with end-user perspective.
A particular topic which is crucial according to market trends that topic is given more importance in terms of time and effort.
Another thing is Suchit makes it very easy for us to learn by following a practical approach.
It has been one month and we are still learning python whereas I have experienced with other institutes that they complete Python within two weekends.
Vikas: that is what we want to deliver to you I’m glad that you are happy with the way things are going.
My question to you is that before joining Accredian how did you decide that you want to join this programme?
Sunil: I have a belief that whenever any new brand comes up in the market they try to give you the best of its capabilities because a lot is at stake for them.
They have to establish a reputation in the market. I don’t know what happens down the lane but currently, you have just started this brand with a lot of passion and dedication.
Another thing which I want to point out here is that I have attended many webinars they were equally inspiring, but somewhere you know what exactly you are looking for and that is what happened when I attended Accredian’s webinar.
I would put it this way that I got what I was looking for. I went through the course curriculum and got all the topics which I wanted to learn.
Vikas: it’s very fulfilling for us to know all that you had to say.
Sunil: I have to go for my MS, and whatever I will learn from Accredian that will always put me ahead of other people.
Vikas: I would say that is our goal to provide our students an edge over others and to help them excel in their future endeavors.
Sunil: to conclude I would say that theoretically if you research on a particular topic you can have lots to speak about it but when it comes down to practical implementation you reach the ground reality. So basically I’m getting what I wanted and I’m thankful for that.
Vikas: Thanks for sharing all that detail, Good luck with all your endeavors and we will get in touch soon for all the input about your work in Data Science after the completion of the course.
