Being a marketing specialist, although Avinash Monteiro handles sales analytics he had little knowledge in data science. However, when he stumbled upon one of Accredian’s webinars one day, he realized the significance and the innumerable opportunities available in data science. So, without any delay, he enrolled for the python data science course of Global Certificate in Data Science (GCD) program at Accredian.
In this interview, let’s see his take on the impact of data science across industries and how his learning experience has been at Accredian.
Question 1: Which program & batch are you part of at Accredian & tell us more about your current work profile?
Avinash: I am part of the Global Certificate in Data Science (GCD) program, April 2020 batch. Presently, I am working as a marketing specialist at Indo-MIM Private Limited. I belong to the manufacturing domain, which involves manufacturing and selling small precision engineering components created through the technology of metal injection molding (MIM) based on customer drawings, currently linking Indian and European territories.
My work involves interacting with customers, understanding their requirements, and creating new business goals. Besides marketing, I also perform sales analytics, project management, sales forecasting and create reports to present it to top management.
Question 2: Walk us through your career journey & what got you interested in Data Science & Machine Learning?
Avinash: I have over five years of experience in sales and marketing. The thing that interests me the most in my current role is sales analytics where I have to check sales history, predict future requirements and benchmark competitors to help the organization plan and strategize for the future.
When I attended one of the Accredian webinars on data science, I got to know just how vast and significant a field data science is in the current times. It was an eye opener and I instantly decided to do the python data science course at Accredian to further pursue a career in that field.
Question 3: What tools and packages in Data Science & Machine Learning have you mastered in your Data Science & AI program at Accredian so far?
Avinash: In the python data science course, the tools I have mastered are Pandas, NumPy, Matplotlib, Seaborn, Psychic, Grid Search, Plotly, etc. I also learned machine learning algorithms like logistic regression, decision tree, random forest, principal component analysis, KNN and others.
Question 4: What are some initial challenges when you got started on your Data Science journey, and how did you overcome them?
Avinash: Coming from a mechanical engineering background, the programming language of Python was challenging. Apart from that, time management was also a major issue in the python data science course. Since I have six days work week, it was challenging for me to balance my work life. But gradually, I got a lot better in managing my time, attending classes and learning. Today, when I look back and see, I realize how I have transformed those roadblocks into my strengths.
Question 5: Who is your favorite faculty at Accredian, and what did you learn from him the Most?
Avinash: My favorite faculty at Accredian is Deepesh. He helped me recollect all the mathematics and statistics lessons I learned in college. I love his teaching style and he inspires me a lot. He teaches every algorithm from scratch and makes it really easy to understand programming. I am really happy to learn machine learning from him.
Question 6: Which are some of the blogs that you follow?
Avinash: I follow TechGeek, AnalyticsVidhya, Kaggle, and GitHub.
Question 7: What is your advice to anyone wanting to start a career in Data Science?
Avinash: My advice to anyone interested in a career in data science would be to really pay attention to your math and statistics skills. You can only manifest a great career in data science if only you love numbers, and of course, practice regularly.
