Meet Narayan Rao Sameni From Plan International I Accredian Spotlight

Narayan Rao Sameni has worked in various industries for over 20 years. Being a project analyst in his current organization, although he handled multitudes of data, he eagerly wanted to know the technical aspect or the role of coding in data science. Curious and wanting to upskill, he enrolled for the Global Certificate in Data Science (GCD) program at Accredian.

In this interview, let’s see what he has to say about the future of data science and how his learning experience has been at Accredian.

Question 1: Which program & batch are you part of at Accredian & tell us more about your current work profile?

Narayan: I am part of the Global Certificate in Data Science (GCD) program, November 2019 batch. I am working as a project analyst in the health domain on maternal and child health. My role involves data analysis, periodic reports generation, support for application development, testing and implementation.

So, I perform data visualization via developing various dashboards and reports and coordinate with stakeholders, clients and agencies for the smooth execution of a project.

Question 2: Walk us through your career journey & what got you interested in Data Science & Machine Learning?

Narayan: I started my career as a volunteer counselor for special children in 2000. And then worked as a drug addiction counselor and interpersonal communicator for HIV AIDS and STI and worked as a city councilor for HIV AIDS and tuberculosis.

From 2007 onwards, I have started working in the area of management information systems. And 2012 onwards, I stepped in the area of data analysis and analytics. In 2017, I worked for a commercial company for data analysis and earned my experience in developing bi. That introduced me to data science and machine learning.

After three years, the work became kind of monotonous and I wanted to do something new. So I thought to upskill myself in something new. Working with data analytics for so many years, I wanted to know more about the coding that goes behind data science to improve my technical skills and finally joined Accredian.

Question 3: What all tools and packages in Data Science & Machine Learning have you mastered in your Data Science & AI program at Accredian so far?

Narayan: So far, in the GCD program, I have learned some tools or packages. These include Python, NumPy, Pandas, Matplotlib, Seaborn, Scikit-Learn, etc. I have also learned some basic statistics and various supervised or unsupervised machine learning techniques. And finally, I have tried my hands on Tableau for data visualization.

Question 4: What were some of the initial challenges when you got started on your Data Science journey and how did you overcome it?

Narayan: Since I am a non-coder, I was completely blank when Python packages were taught on Jupyter Notebook. I have spent a lot of time understanding each step of coding, how it functions and what is the logic behind them, etc. Later, however, I overcame all those challenges. Now, it’s pretty easy to build any machine learning models and perform other data-related tasks.

Question 5: Who is your favorite faculty at Accredian and what did you learn from him the Most?

Narayan: My favorite faculties are Suchit Majumdar and Deepesh Wadhwani. Suchit is a fantastic teacher and guide who helps the non-coders to learn very easily. He offers a step-by-step explanation of all coding so that each student can learn quickly.

He also engages all with Q/A sessions so that students have a clear understanding of the basic foundation. Deepesh helped me a lot to learn the supervised or unsupervised machine learning techniques. So, thanks to all those faculties at Accredian.

Question 6: What are the current trends in Data Science that you are most excited about?

Narayan: COVID 19 offered an opportunity to the world to really become tech savvy. Most businesses, that were not on digital platforms, have started to become more digitized and technologically fluent to streamline processes and optimize business efficiency amidst crisis.

From commercial to healthcare sectors, everyone is trying to equip themselves with data science applications and knowledge for each access and execution of tasks. So data science is going to the most popular field in the future and will become an essential part of our day-to-day lives.

Question 7: Which are some of the blogs that you follow?

Narayan: I follow a few data science blogs like Medium, Kaggle, KDnuggets, AnalyticsVidhya

This was a conversation with one of our GCD students – Narayan Rao Sameni.
